When you attempt to access a network drive you may end up with an error on \u201cRestoring Network Connections\u201d message box telling error:<\/p>\n<p><em>An error occurred while reconnecting &lt;drive letter&gt; to &lt;file path&gt; Microsoft Windows Network: The local device name is already in use. This connection has not been restored.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you try to access the drive via Command Prompt, the error message might be:<\/p>\n<p><em>Map network drives\u2026 System error 85 has occurred. The local device name is already in use. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eassos.com\/blog\/fix-the-device-is-not-ready-error-without-losing-data\/\">The device is not ready<\/a>. Locating AClient\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s have a look at two cases about the error:<\/p>\n<p>Case 1: <em>\u201cI was trying to access files on a shared folder, but I couldn\u2019t view files and received error: \u2018The local device is already in use. This connection has been restored.\u2019 However, I am able to open this folder on other PCs. I\u2019ve already tried deleting and remapping the drive but nothing changed. This computer is running Windows XP and other client PCs I tried are running Windows 7.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Case 2: <em>\u201cI attempted to map a J drive and K drive on our domain. Drive letters couldn\u2019t be changed, as all PCs in this domain has them in the same way. When I do a net use like this : net use J: \\\\ server\\folder The command completed successfully. Net use K:\\\\server\\folder2. However, I ended up with error message: \u2018system error 85 has occurred. The local device name is already in use.\u2019 Anyone have solutions to help me fix it?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h1>How to fix \u201cthe local device name is already in use\u201d?<\/h1>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Solution 1: Restart terminal services<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Step 1: Log on your computer using Administrator account so that you have full administrative rights.<\/p>\n<p>Step 2: Click Windows and R key together to open Run box. Type <strong>services.msc<\/strong> and click OK.<\/p>\n<p>Step 3: On the Service window, drag the scroll bar to locate <strong>Remote Desktop Services<\/strong>. Right-click on it and select <strong>Restart<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Step 4: Locate <strong>Computer Browser<\/strong>, right-click on it and select Restart.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Solution 2: Edit registry<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Disclaimer: Editing system registry might be unsafe, as any improper operation may damage operating system. Thus you should create a backup before editing registry.<\/p>\n<p>Step 1: Open Registry Editor.
