If you do not know what do to with this issue, take a look at methods in this article.<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>What is the action can\u2019t be completed error?<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>In general, if a file is open in certain application, then operating system will block other software to use the same file on case of any unexpected error. This often happens to system files and folders. Thus operations like move, edit, copy, cut, etc, are not available while the file is in use by any running program. The error message appears on \u201cFile In Use\u201d message box saying \u201cThe action can\u2019t be completed because the file is open in another program. Close the file and try again.\u201d The message is followed by the information of the file in question including file name, type, size and modified data, as screenshot below:<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Solutions to \u201cthe action cannot be completed because the file is open in other program\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Method 1: Fix file open in another program error using Local Group Policy Editor<\/span><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Press Windows key and R to open Run dialog box which can also be open by clicking Start and Run.<\/li>\n<li>Enter <strong>gpedit.msc<\/strong> in Run box and click OK button to open Local Group Policy Editor.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eassos.com\/how-to\/images\/run-gpedit.png\" alt=\"The action cannot be completed because the file is open in other program\" width=\"413\" height=\"212\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Navigate the following path:\u00a0<em>User Configuration \\Administrative Templates\\Windows Components \\File Explorer<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Click File Explorer from the directory on the left part and locate \u201cTurn off the caching of thumbnails in hidden thumbs.db files\u201d. This item is set to Not Configured by default. Double click it to open the setting window.<\/li>\n<li>Select Enabled option and click Apply and OK. Close Local Group Policy Editor<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Method 2: Fix the folder in use issue with Registry Editor<\/span><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Open Registry Editor. Press key combination Win + R and put <strong>regedit<\/strong> in Run dialog box to click OK.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eassos.com\/how-to\/images\/fix-error-code-0x80004005-02.png\" alt=\"The action cannot be completed because the file is open in other program\" width=\"415\" height=\"214\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Navigate the follow path from the left part:\u00a0<em>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Explorer<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Click Explorer from the left pane and right click empty area on the right part to select New &gt; DWORD Value. Name the newly created DWORD as\u00a0<strong>DisableThumbsDBOnNetworkFolders. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Double click the newly created registry and enter 1 in the Value data section.
